In kitchen cabinetry, a pilaster refers to a vertical column that is often used as a decorative element or to provide additional support. Pilasters are typically found on the sides of cabinets or on the face of an island or peninsula. They can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, MDF, or even metal, and come in a range of styles to match the overall design aesthetic of the kitchen. In addition to providing structural support, pilasters can add visual interest to a cabinet design by breaking up the space and providing a focal point for the eye.
One of the most common uses for pilasters in kitchen cabinetry is to create a furniture-like look. By incorporating decorative pilasters on the face of cabinets or on an island or peninsula, homeowners can give their kitchen a more traditional or formal appearance. Pilasters can be simple or ornate, depending on the desired aesthetic, and can be used in combination with other decorative elements such as crown molding or corbels to create a cohesive look.
In addition to their decorative function, pilasters can also be used to provide additional support for cabinets or countertops. For example, a pilaster can be used to support an overhanging countertop on an island or peninsula, helping to distribute the weight and prevent the countertop from sagging or cracking.
Pilasters can also be used to reinforce the sides of cabinets, particularly for heavier items such as pantry cabinets or appliance garages. Overall, pilasters are a versatile and functional element in kitchen cabinetry design, providing both structural support and aesthetic appeal.
